How Ohio taxable income is figured
Ohio has no standard deduction. The personal exemption depends on income: $2,350 per person up to $40,000, $2,100 per person up to $80,000, $1,850 per person up to $500,000, $0 above $500,000. Pre-tax 401(k), health and HSA deductions are assumed to reduce Ohio wages the same way they reduce federal wages.
Local income taxes in Ohio
Most Ohio municipalities levy local income taxes of 1%-3% on wages (Columbus 2.5%, Cleveland 2.5%, Cincinnati 1.8%, Toledo 2.5%, Akron 2.5%, Dayton 2.5%); many school districts add separate school district income taxes of 0.25%-2%. Both are on top of state tax.
